Alfred Nu Steele (April 24, 1900 – April 19, 1959) was a soft drink entrepreneur in the United States. In 1923, he graduated from Northwestern University, where he played football, and went on to work as an advertising executive. He began his career as a vice president of marketing for the Coca-Cola Company. In 1949, he was named CEO of the Pepsi-Cola Company. Between 1955 and 1957, revenues soared under his leadership. He decreased the amount of sugar in drinks and brought Pepsi products to developing countries. He worked for Pepsi until his death in April 1959, when he died of a heart attack. He was actress Joan Crawford’s fourth and final husband (married May 10, 1955 in Las Vegas). Steele’s hand-picked replacement as chairman and CEO, Herbert L. Barnet, named her to the Board of Directors. Pepsi product placement can be noticed in numerous of Joan Crawford’s later films, including Strait-Jacket (1964) and Berserk! (1967) Crawford would serve on the Pepsi-Cola Company Board of Directors until her forced retirement in 1973. Crawford died in 1977, and their ashes were placed together in a crypt. They are buried in Hartsdale, New York’s Ferncliff Cemetery. For no apparent reason, his crypt marker shows his middle initial as “M.”
