Jermain Taylor (born August 11, 1978 in Little Rock, Arkansas) is an American professional boxer who has held the titles of Undisputed Middleweight and IBF Middleweight Champion. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas. He made his professional boxing debut in 2001 and went on to win his first 25 fights, including wins against previous champions Ral Márquez and William Joppy. He then went on to win the World Heavyweight Championship in 2003. Taylor beat Bernard Hopkins on July 16, 2005, to capture the Undisputed Middleweight Championship, as well as the Ring Middleweight Championship and all of the middleweight championships from the four main boxing organisations. Taylor also won the Ring Middleweight Championship in 2005. Taylor, who started boxing for the first time at the age of 13, received many honours during his amateur career, beginning with his victory in the 1996 Under-19 World Championship. The rest of his career saw him win a pair of Police Athletic League (PAL) championships as well as National Golden Gloves titles, as well as finishing second and third, respectively, in the 1997 and 1998 United States Championships in boxing. Taylor competed in the Goodwill Games in 1998, when he was awarded a bronze medal. When he was selected for the Olympic Boxing Team in 2000, he made history by being the first boxer from Arkansas to participate in an Olympic Games competition. Taylor finished third in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where he competed for the United States. Taylor won a rematch against Hopkins, as well as victories over Kassim Ouma and Cory Spinks, as well as a tie with Winky Wright, during his tenure as world heavyweight champion.
